Note Taking

Recently I read Richard Branson's book "The Vigin Way" & one thing from the book that I was able to absorb is the importance of note taking.

Many times I have seen people coming for meetings or training with nothing in hand to take notes. Our brains cannot retain everthing we see or hear & we tend to forget things fast so taking notes is a habit that we need to cultivate in our lives. I have three methods of note taking,

  1. Laptop to jot down notes when I am at a group meeting (& also get some work done on the sly when I am at a point in the meeting that I find least interesting).
  2. Note book to take down points when I am at a one on one meeting.
  3. Phone to take down notes when I am in church listening to the sermon or when I forget to take the notebook to the one on one meeting. The apps I use are mainly Google Keep / Ever Note.
The above works for me, you need to find what works for you. Here's how you should make notes,
  1. Keep it short & simple. With electronic devices, auto complete is a big aid to note taking.
  2. Capture the point made. Listen & write.
  3. Don't keep writing paragraphs, just take it down in point form.
  4. At the end indicate when & where this note was taken, other wise you will tend to have pages & pages of notes with no indication of what these notes were for.
Hope this helps. Please do make your suggestions on the comments section below.

Getting back in

So it's been a couple of years now. No time to blog would be a terrible excuse, rather a loss of interest would be a better one. Anyways here's to fresh starts.

I will be mainly blogging about normal everyday issues - well at least normal & everyday for me. However I must warn you that there will be a lot of tech posts since that's my background. The topic I will be least touching on is Sri Lankan politics & Cricket, yes Cricket, not all Sri Lankans crave for cricket, there are many of us who don't.

Well once again here's to new beginnings... cheers!
